Come bowling at Benitachell Bowls Club

BENITACHELL Bowls Club is unique. It is the only bowls club on the Costa Blanca that is wholly owned by the members. It is run by the members through a board of directors and the club captain. This allows the club to offer a very special ambience in which to enjoy a game of bowls as well as the many other social activities it offers.
The club started in 1988 with only two annual members, but today it has around 200 members, comprised of titleholders and annual and temporary members.
President Brian Doggett explained: “We aim to provide the perfect setting to enjoy a game of bowls. There is a clubhouse which offers a wide variety of food and beverages. We also have a very active social scene with everything from barn dances to paella bake-off’s, and of course seasonal functions.”
The image of bowls has undergone a dramatic change over the last few years. It is drawing a younger crowd and the membership of Benitachell Bowls Club pays testament to this. Brian said: “Our membership is varied. We have bowlers in their 40s right through to their 80s. Bowling is one of the few sports that you can enjoy whatever your age.”
The membership is also evenly split between men and women. Many couples bowl together although once on the rink it is the team that comes first.
The club offers a taster session for those who wish to experience bowls for the first time. There are six hours of tuition that is held either one-to-one or in groups.
If you find yourself bitten by the bowling bug then it is very inexpensive to purchase the required equipment and clothing. Around €150 will set you up with a set of bowls and the clothing and shoes needed to play.
One of the other benefits of bowling is the exercise, both physical and mental, that it provides. Games usually last around three hours and during that time there is plenty of walking up and down the rinks, plenty of stretching and bending as you deliver the bowls, and plenty of humour and mental calculations to see if you will emerge victorious.
Brian said: “Bowling is much more than the game. For our members it provides a social hub. They come and play in the morning, then enjoy the clubhouse facilities. We pride ourselves on providing a delightful experience, on or off the green.”
