IS Spanish nursing in crisis?
SPAIN’S biggest trade union the CCOO (Confederacion Sindical de Commission Obreras) reports that nursing cover in El Campello is in crisis, with too few qualified nurses to provide support or holiday cover. The CCOO has denounced the shortage of staff in the health centres of El Campello, claiming that the shortages are affecting waiting times and also the standard of nursing care. The Health Department denies that there is any such crisis and has responded that even in the height of the summer the service is properly supported. The union refutes this and upholds that nursing cover is far from satisfactory. Details were given by the CCOO that contended when nursing staff are taken off duty to assist a doctor or to attend an emergency, his or her department copes without adequate nursing until such time as the nurse can return to post.A spokesman added that additionally at the busiest time of the year at the height of the summer, nursing reinforcements are promised but never actually arrive, accusing the Department of Health of making savings on budget at the cost of quality of care.
