British Embassy to recruit new Honorary Consul for Menorca

THE British Embassy is on the lookout for a new Honorary Consul for the Island of Menorca, as Deborah Hellyer has decided to stand down after 23 years of service.
The Honorary Consul represents the UK Government in Menorca and provides a first point of contact for British expats requiring assistance. The role is supported by the British Consulate team in Palma de Mallorca.

“I would like to thank Deborah Hellyer for all she has done for British nationals living in and visiting Menorca, and all she has done to support the work of consular colleagues based on Mallorca,” said Ambassador Simon Manley. He continued: “Deborah has made a tremendous contribution, over almost a quarter of a century, assisting British residents and visitors alike.
“Her support has proved invaluable for our activity on this island, which is so dear to the heart of so many Britons, and I wish her all the very best for a well deserved retirement.”

“It has been an honour to serve British nationals, and an enriching experience that has given me huge pleasure. I am enormously grateful to the Menorcan authorities, both civil and military, to the Consular Corps, to the people of Menorca and the British resident population, all of whom have always been so generous, kind and helpful. I offer my best wishes to my successor in this important and fulfilling role, who will be well supported by my full-time consular colleagues in Palma de Mallorca.” Said Ms Hellyer.
The Honorary Consul position consists in providing first-response assistance to British nationals on issues including lost or stolen passports, hospitalisation and police detention, and also a limited representational role in maintaining contact with the local authorities. In a crisis, the Honorary Consul is expected to provide reliable and immediate information to the Consulate in Mallorca.
The position is voluntary and non-salaried, although a small stipend is paid and reasonable expenses reimbursed. The job is likely to suit a professional person of good standing in the community, who has their own offices with sufficient space to accommodate the Honorary Consulate and customers. Fluency in both English and Spanish is a must.

Until a new Honorary Consul is appointed, the full-time consular team in Palma de Mallorca will continue to assist British nationals in Menorca over the telephone, and in person on the island via appointment.

More than 450,000 Britons visit the island every year, and some 3,200 British nationals are registered on the Padrón as residents.
