Improvements encourage visits to Suarez wetlands

THE Suarez Wetlands, the most important natural site in Motril, has had a series of improvements carried out, and now boasts new information signs, paths and picnic areas.
The work is aimed at increasing the area’s attraction to tourists, with visits so far totalling 44,000 since the site was made accessible to the public back in 2006.
“This is one of Motril’s most interesting natural sites and the council felt it was necessary to enrich and expand the area,” said Mayor Luisa Garcia Chamorro.
Plans have included the construction of new observation and picnic areas, a botanic garden, as well as the repaving of the La Culebra path.
A group of students from local Secondary School Nuestra Señora del Pilar visited the area recently and helped with the fitting of bird nests they themselves built in different trees so that different species can find a home in the wetlands.
The project had a total cost of €140,000, paid for with European funds.
