Cultures combine at European Day

CULTURE and community spirit were in abundance in Torrevieja at the weekend as Saturday saw two of the town’s most popular and most important events, the May Fair and European Day, come together.
The European Day celebrations drew hundreds of international residents to Plaza de la Constitucion as Mayor Eduardo Dolon, along with Councillor for Foreigners, Rosario Martinez, welcomed the residents and various associations before the hoisting of the EU flag as the ‘Ode to Joy’ by Ludwig van Beethoven was performed.
Following the ceremony, there were performances by dance troupes, singers and bands from France, Bulgaria and Germany.
Representing Britain was the Phoenix Band who concluded the morning’s event and Chloe Leigh who performed the song to the soundtrack of the film The Cucaracha Club, which was shot in and around Torrevieja.
Billie Anthony Gaddess from Siesta Productions and writer of the film, said the group was delighted and honoured to have been asked to attend the European Day celebrations.
“Chloe got a great reception and there has been a lot of positive response to the song and film.”
