Historic bomb shelter uncovered in Palma’s Zara building

AN ARCHAELOGICAL research team have found the entrance to a bomb shelter in a building located at the Es Born district in Palma, currently home to Spanish clothing shop Zara.

“This bomb shelter was documented in the map of refugees of the Spanish Civil war but the location of its entrance was unknown,” said an expert of the Heritage Department of Mallorca’s Provincial Government.

“Upon the removal of a wall, which served as a kind of cover, the stairs were unveiled,” said archaeologist Magdalena Sastre, Head of the Project.

The provincial government has allowed the company in charge of the archaeological digs to continue research work in the basement of the building, which was expected to be turned into a warehouse, and has ensured that the bomb shelter will be preserved in its entirety.
