A TOTAL of 23 ducks were found dead at Salobreña’s Parque de la Fuente on Wednesday (April 15).
Local Police believe that the culprits used a dangerous breed of dog as well as shotguns to kill the birds.
The council has stressed the heightened tragedy of the event, as the town is currently celebrating its first Birds of Salobreña Week.
Only two ducks in a critical condition, with dog bites and shotgun injuries, have survived the attack, according to a statement released by the town council.
“It was a despicable, cowardly and nonsensical act, which has destroyed one of the landmarks of our town,” said Mayor Gonzalo Fernandez Pulido.
Head of the PP conservative party, Mari Carmen Vilchez, commented: “How many times does a tragedy of this magnitude have to happen for the government to understand that increased surveillance is needed?”
It is not the first time that the park has become a crime scene. Back in February, the unknown culprits broke the entrance fence and the locks of cages where the animals are kept. They stole rabbits, chickens and guinea pigs and slaughtered a dozen other animals.
No one has yet been found guilty of these two attacks, and Local Police and Guardia Civil will continue looking into the case.
