CHOPPY WATERS: Bobbing about but for how much longer?
THE Nautical Club of Altea, with its 40-year history of major sporting and social events, has been plunged into a state of total confusion and uncertainty regarding its future.
The club board is outraged that after 15 years the Consell (regional government) has still not granted the renewal of its concession to operate facilities. At the recent annual general meeting, a motion was passed to exert pressure on the authorities, including industrial action, to continue throughout the pre-election campaign.
Club President José Román Zurutuza Reigosa said that despite “numerous meetings with prepared briefs” the Consell has still not responded.
The situation means that the club cannot even carry out necessary maintenance work on the facilities, which have deteriorated over the years. The board fears this will eventually turn potential investors and customers away.
The Nautical Club of Altea is a non-profit organisation whose objective is to promote water sports in the municipality. The club has more than 1,000 social members, providing nearly 200 jobs in the local economy – which the board foresees are in danger of disappearing if the concession is not renewed.
