MALAGA COUNCIL is intent on encouraging cycling as a method of transport in the city and will be testing new parking systems to reduce bike thefts.

Lack of safe parking areas is reportedly one of the main deterrents for those who would be inclined to use bikes to get about the city, and the council has spent €21,000 on a new experimental project to improve this situation.

The new system is to be tested this summer within two parking areas for bicycles, one in Plaza de la Marina and another near the university library in Teatinos, within which only bike owners will have access to their individual parking areas, which will be opened and closed via a mobile app.
