BIRDBOXES are being placed in trees in El Chaparral and Calahonda in an attempt to reduce the numbers of pine processionary caterpillars which appear each year.
The aim, Environment councillor for Mjias Jose Francisco Ruiz Fontalba explained, is to attract small birds that include the caterpillars in their diet.
Altogether 300 birdboxes, with small entrances to avoid larger species taking them over, will be set up at an approximate cost of €3,000, which the council hopes will allow the pesky and dangerous caterpillars to be reduced in a natural way.
