Benidorm recreates a slice of its history

RENACTMENT: Bringing the boat ashore

THE mysterious arrival of the statue of Our Lady in Benidorm on March 15, 1745, was recently re-enacted on the Poniente beach.

Hundreds watched as an empty, drifting boat was towed to the shore where it was set alight because villagers feared that the crew had died of the plague.  Legend insists that afterwards, undamaged by the fire, they found a statue of Madonna and Child in the bows. This was taken to the parish church where it remains to this day.
