CHANGES to Imserso cut-price holiday packages for pensioners in Spain may mean many two and three-star Costa del Sol hotels are forced to close for the season next winter.
Coastal hotel managers are worried about the changes to the scheme announced by the Spanish government, which has given priority to four star establishments.
Over the almost 30 years the Imserso scheme has been running it has been the reason many lower category establishments have been able to stay open over the winter.
Now, although other hotels are not excluded from the scheme, four-star hotels will be more likely to be approved in detriment of those of a lower category.
Managers explained that although the Imserso scheme did not provide much in the way of profits, it allowed them to keep hotels open and staff in work during the quiet winter months, staff that could well be in the dole queue next winter due to the changes.
