RUSSIAN tourists spend more on the Costa del Sol than anywhere else in Spain apart from Barcelona, a report has revealed.

The report by Global Blue consulting group for 2014 revealed that Puerto Banus was second on the list of places in the country where Russian tourists spent the most cash, beaten only by the Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona and doubling the amount spent in the Salamanca district of Madrid.

Costa del Sol Tourism leader Elias Bendodo said it was essential to continue promoting the coast in the Russian market due to its high spending and future growth potential.

“Malaga-Costa del Sol airport registered 60,631 visitors from Russia in 2014, a 15.6 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

“Therefore, we need to continue to encourage visitors from the country, as they are well-educated and interested in culture, history and heritage,” Bendodo explained.

In a bid to continue encouraging Russian tourists, the Costa del Sol tourist board invited 16 travel agents from Moscow on a tour of the area, which included visits to Marbella Old Town, Puerto Banus and Ronda, where the agents were taken to see a traditional flamenco show and visited the Ascari racing circuit.
