Transmatic celebrate 25 years of rebuilding and repairing

THE firm was established in 1990 by Paul Sutcliffe shortly after he moved with his family to Spain. Paul had worked in the industry since leaving college in 1973 and saw an opportunity to relocate to a nicer environment. Back then there were relatively few automatic cars on the road in Spain, but Transmatic was busy from day one as they were the only company in the area specialising solely in automatic gearboxes.

Twenty five years later Transmatic is as busy as ever with the running of the business in the hands of Paul’s sons Robert and James. They work with all makes and models of automatic transmission from classic cars of the 1940’s up to the latest eight speed units fitted to Audi, BMW and Mercedes plus the new generation fuel saving CVT and DSG transmissions now installed in many cars.

Robert says “Just about all the newer models have computer controlled transmissions and we have to constantly update our diagnostic and analysis tools as the industry is changing so rapidly. To keep up to date with the latest technology we regularly send staff to attend seminars, mainly in Germany and the United States. We are also members of several technical associations and are in frequent contact with major manufacturers such as Mercedes Benz and ZF of Germany, General Motors in the US, Borg Warner and many others.

With customers from all areas of Spain the business is split more or less evenly between private vehicle owners and garages.

One aspect of automatic transmission work which is often ignored is servicing, most regular car servicing schedules don’t include changing the transmission oil and filter, in fact many car manufacturers advise that the transmission will need no attention during the life of the car. In practice it has been found that servicing of the transmission on a regular basis can often save an expensive breakdown later on.
