DANA, a Cocker Spaniel, had a lucky escape after being sucked into massive concrete pipes connecting the Rio Guadaiza reservoir near Benahavis to lake La Concepcion in Istan.
Owner Gloria Espada had decided to make the most of a beautiful day by taking her daughter and pet for a picnic by the reservoir and almost saw it end in tragedy as the 13-year-old family pet was sucked through gates in the reservoir after approaching for a drink.
The desperate owner dialed 112 and police and firemen were sent to the scene, who called water authority workers to the rescue.
After closing the gates, the workers set off down the large cement pipes and found Dana, injured but alive, four kilometres away almost at the end of the pipes where they run into La Concepcion.
Following her scare, Espada complained at the lack of security measures, warning signs or telephones for use in emergencies by the reservoir and explained that she intended to demand that the Junta de Andalucia regional government increase safety measures in the area.
