TWELVE Dutch and Belgian hockey teams are spending February training at Benalmadena’s Campo de Retamar sports installations, soaking up some sun to see them through the rest of their season on cold, muddy pitches.

A total of almost 300 people between players and support staff are included in the visit, organised by Benalmadena Hockey Club in collaboration with the municipal sports department, and are expected to bring an additional income of more than €300,000 to the town.

Mayor Paloma Garcia Galvez, along with sports councillor Juan Olea and hockey club president Andres Perez, welcomed the young players to the area and expressed her hopes that they would enjoy their visit to Benalmadena.

Garcia Galvez thanked Benalmadena Hockey Club for organising the visit and stressed the importance of this type of initiative to promote the area and beat seasonal tourism slumps.

The teams will hold a number of friendly matches during their stay as part of their preparation for the second part of the season, with both male and female teams including ZSV Schaerweijde, Royal Heracles HC, MHC Rosmalen Dames 1, Spirit Dames 1, NMHC JA1 2014-2015, Leidse Hockeyclub Roomburg and Gooische HC Dames 1 playing on the Retamar fields.
