PEACE was disrupted at Malaga port yesterday evening (February 16) when the Juan J Sister, known as the Melillero, crashed into the quayside while docking.

The ferry, which runs the Malaga to Melilla route, failed to go into reverse and although anchors were cast in attempt to stop, they did not manage to prevent the boat crashing into La Huida yacht and the Muelle Uno dock.

Another two boats were grazed during the crash, but La Huida took the brunt of the hit and owner Victorio Cheli explained that a crane had to hoist it out of the water to stop it sinking.

The quayside and pavement were also damaged by the crash, which is believed to have been due to an electronic fault combined with strong winds.

The departure of the evening service was cancelled while technicians were called in to run checks on the ferry, which was moved to another area of port to make space for the Sorolla, due to leave for Melilla at 1pm today.

The incident was the first reported in the city’s port for seven years.
