Almeria mayor visits troops in Afghanistan

MAYOR of Almeria City, Luis Rogelio Rodriguez-Comendador, along with national members of the Spanish government, visited Spanish troops in Afghanistan.

The delegation, consisting of 25 senators and deputies, also spent three days in China, headed by the Chief of Defence, General Admiral Fernando Garica Sanchez. 

On arrival at the support base in Herat, Afghanistan, the delegation was greeted by Italian general Maurizio Scardino, chief of Regional Assistance Command and Training. Spain commanded this department until 2005 with Italy taking over since then. Also in the welcoming committee was the head of the Spanish contingent in Herat, Colonel Carlos Diez.

During the visit, the delegation participated in a ceremony to honour the fallen before visiting the living quarters and work areas of Spanish staff. They also learned about the work carried out by different units including Tactical Force Protection and the military hospital. 

The mission is dedicated to training and advising Afghan police and military forces.
