Choked streams a flood and fire hazard

CAMPELLO town hall called on the Confederacion Hidrografica del Jucar (CHJ) to clear local streambeds.

Four homes on the Alkabir urbanisation suffered minor damage in a recent fire that started in the clogged Amerador watercourse.  The council wants permission to clean this generally-dry stream as well as others inside the town, since the CHJ – whose responsibility it is – has failed to do so.

These should be cleared of the rubbish and vegetation which are fire hazards and also choke the streams during periods of heavy rain, the town hall said.

Alkabir residents have been asking the CHJ to do something about the Amerador as well as the Messell stream which also borders the urbanisation for years, they said.

“They are full of mosquitoes and pose serious fire and flood problems,” said a councillor who suggested that cleaning the streams could provide work for unemployed local residents.
