A MALAGA City court has found a plastic surgeon guilty of manslaughter and jailed him for two and a half years.
Although routine tests had been carried out before surgery, the doctor had failed to inform a liposuction patient of the risks involved and used incorrect techniques during surgery, which caused perforation of the intestine.
Slack post-surgery follow-up meant it took six days to detect the peritonitis the patient developed as a result of the perforation.
Over the next five months the woman needed seven operations and finally died of multiple organ failure.
After hearing the details, the court considered the doctor’s imprudence to be behind the woman’s death and sent him to jail, also ordering him to pay €300,000 in damages to his victim’s family and banning him from his profession for four years.
