RETAMAR south in Almeria City will soon have 1,000 smart meters as part of the project Urban Water.

The introduction of the system is planned to improve water supply efficiency. The southern area of Retamar is the first to receive the meters as part of the Urban Water project which is made up of 11 partners from several European countries – Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the UK.

Implementation begins in March 2015 through the water company FCC Aqualia. Representative for Promotion and Citizen Services for Almeria City, Manuel Guzman, explained: “We will proceed towards the installation of 1,000 smart meters plus a fixed network in southern Retamar, allowing for customer interaction through new technologies, affecting service improvement and cost savings while also providing advanced solutions for remote meter reading and measurement. This will provide consumption data in real time.”

In addition the meters will allow for automated billing. Guzman stated: “It is expected that after a few weeks of testing, the system will be up and running in May.”
