FROM a total of 7,563,513 appointments at Valencian hospitals and specialist centres made last year, 733,580 people failed to turn up; a 9.7 per cent absenteeism rate.
Just over 25 per cent of the 14,254 written complaints received from patients last year centred on the long wait, averaging 38 days to see specialists, and as a result the Regional Health Department is planning to contact outpatients to confirm whether they intend to keep their appointments.
It is hoped this would reduce patient absenteeism and allow for greater efficiency and productivity within the health service with more appointments able to be made if doctors knew of those not going to show up.
