MARKET SITE: Work in progress.
CAMPELLO Town Hall is carrying out reforms to Plaza de Saint Christol les Alez, built in the Costa Blanca town in 1991.
The lower level of the plaza is used each Wednesday for the weekly market and during fiestas but also provides free parking for members of the public visiting the adjoining sports complex or the town hall.
The renovations, costing €145,000, were part of town hall’s 2014 investment programme and were made possible thanks to the surplus in last year’s accounts, explained Campello’s mayor Juanjo Berenguer.
The pillars and ceiling at the lower level have now been painted white, making the precinct appear much airier and lighter, said Infrastucture councillor Alejandro Collado.
Although the town hall weatherproofed the surface of the square some years back, constant use of the upper and lower levels have taken their toll. Structural damage has been located and all beams and supports reinforced, while the stairs to the parking and market areas have been faced with granite and ceramic.
