Spain tops Irish holiday charts

IRISH tourists look likely to continue their love affair with Spain this year, with travel agents on the Emerald Isle predicting a bumper 2015 for holidays.

Last year, nearly 1.3 million Irish packed their bags and headed to sunny Spain on holiday. A new survey of members of the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) shows that 66 per cent of agents in Ireland reported that Spain was their most popular travel destination in 2014.

And Spain was well ahead in terms of ‘best value’ destinations with the Irish, with 41 per cent of votes. Spain’s nearest competitors in the survey – Portugal and Turkey – only registered 18 per cent.

“As a destination Spain has something for everyone with beach holidays, energetic city breaks, country hideaways and spiritual retreats,” said Pat Dawson, chief executive of the ITAA. “It has long been a favourite of the Irish public and it’s great to see that two new Spanish regions, Valencia and Costa Calida, will be exhibiting at the Holiday World Show Dublin this year.”

According to the Irish Examiner newspaper, 55 per cent of ITAA members said they expect Spain to be their most popular destination again this year.
