AGRICULTURE workers on the Costa Tropical have demanded once and for all the canalisation of water from the Rules Reservoir.
The field workers claim that the water collected in the reservoir is being emptied into the sea, while they are forced to pay high water bills as they have to get water with the help of electrical devices.
The new system called for by locals would alleviate this cost, as the water would be brought in with the help of gravity, and not machinery.
“We cannot wait any longer. If they do not carry out the canalisation from the reservoir, many families will go bankrupt,” said a workers’ representative.
It is estimated that around 45 per cent of farms have been abandoned due to workers not being able to meet bills.
More than 4,000 jobs are created thanks directly to the region’s fields, and a further 6,000 indirectly, and together with tourism it is one of the main sources of the area’s income.
