Cycling first as Tour of Spain rides into town

LA VUELTA: Torrevieja will host launch of stage 9 for first time in 80 year history of the race.

TORREVIEJA is to host a stage of La Vuelta de España (Tour of Spain) cycle race for the first time in the history of the 80-year-old event.

The town has received passage of cyclists in the Tour of Spain on numerous occasions but until now it has never been designated to host a departure or arrival. This year, however, it will start off the ninth stage of the race on August 30, with cyclists making the 168.3-kilometre journey to Cumbre del Sol in Benitachell.

Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, was joined by Deputy for Provincial Tourism on the Costa Blanca, Joaquin Albaladejo, Torrevieja Councillor for Sports, Luis Maria Pizana, and President of Torrevieja Cycling Club, Manuel Peñalver, in presenting the Tour 2015 in Torremolinos, Malaga.

The Tour of Spain runs from August 22 to September 13.
