CAMPELLO’s 1991 Monument to the Fisherman, has been restored.
The monolith on the Carrerlamar beach in front of the Paseo Maritimo once again looks as the late Alicante sculptor Arcadi Blasco intended although its situation has changed. The monument was originally installed on Carrerlamar in the sea near the water’s edge but is now entirely on land following beach regeneration in 2003.
Over the years the sculpture suffered badly from the effects of sand, sea, sun and wind and needed a thorough restoration. Its ceramic facings were removed one by one, graffiti scrawls were removed, missing tiles and those that were badly-damaged were copied before being reattached to the monument.
The inner cement construction, which was in a “lamentable” condition, also had to be repaired. Once finished, the entire sculpture was treated with a special waterproof finish to protect it from the effects of the weather and the sea air.
The €40,000 cost of restoration was met by Campello council’s Infrastructure department.
