IT’S name, ‘beautiful’ in old Spanish describes this restaurant ‘beautifully’ and the environment presents an opportunity for cosy winter evenings dining by candlelight.
Alex and Melissa Nicholl opened Hermosa Bistro in 2007 and brought with them the style of glamorous Hollywood with a casual Californian decor.
Alex was a barrister in London and moved to LA to work in TV and production. During his years in California, and with his passion for food, he soaked up those flavours from the crossroads of cultures that is California, such as Asian and Mexican, to then replicate them here with fresh Spanish ingredients.
With a menu that changes with each season, and picture-perfect dishes, Hermosa has many regulars and rave reviews on popular restaurant websites.
“We do exceptional food served in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. What is more, the quality of our food and the service are consistent,” Melissa explained. “We like to think that we take our food very seriously, but not ourselves!”
Indonesian spiced salmon cakes, the award-winning baked Andalucian goat cheese, or Hermosa Beach micro-burgers are some of their awesome starters.
Clients can then choose a main from the ‘turf’ (meat) or ‘surf’ (fish) choice, with the star dish being the prime Irish fillet steak with oyster mushrooms, asparagus, roasted garlic mash and their signature green-peppercorn and sun-dried tomato sauce.
And for a good ending, why not taste the key-lime pie, a mojito jelly and fruit compote or the Hermosa Beach Coronel, a Cassis sorbet and berry vodka.
With food like this, it is no surprise that Hermosa has a spin-off catering service for clients who enjoy their food so much, they want to bring it home for a special occasion.
When asked about the winter menu, Melissa said: “The Winter Red menu will have hearty, warm dishes with two courses for 18.50 euros or three courses for 22.50 euros, with a 10 per cent discount if you order before 8pm!
Sunday lunch is from 1pm.
Hermosa Bistro is open Tuesday to Sunday from 6.30pm to 10.30pm.
