OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have carried out a controlled explosion on a Second World War bomb snagged in fishing nets.
The bomb was caught by fishermen off the coast of Almerimar in El Ejido and reported to GEDEX, the branch of the Guardia Civil in Almeria City that deals with objects of this type. The officers advised the fishermen to leave the bomb alone while they travelled to the scene.
GEDEX officers carried out a controlled explosion after measuring the bomb and logging its details. The bomb, originally manufactured in England during the Second World War, was adopted by various countries and this particular model was commonly used during the war. The bomb was 50 centimetres in length, 40 centimetres in diameter and weighed 30 kilograms, 15 kilograms of which was TNT explosive.
GEDEX advises that if anyone finds an explosive device they should leave it undisturbed and report it immediately to the Guardia Civil by telephoning 062.
