Customs seize illegal fireworks

Rex Hammock

CUSTOMS officials made two separate seizures of illegal fireworks in the run-up to the Christmas period.

Her Majesty’s Customs increased the number of checks aimed at the detection of fireworks purchased in Spain before Christmas and the New Year as it is an offence to import them without a licence under the Imports and Exports Act.

An awareness campaign was launched by HM Customs, Royal Gibraltar Police and the Gibraltar Fire & Rescue Service in order to inform the public of the dangers of sub-standard fireworks. The public has been advised to purchase fireworks locally.

The Gibraltar Defence police have been assisting customs officers at the border with the use of specially trained dogs.
