MALLORCA has set itself an ambitious waste reduction goal for the year 2020.
In compliance with a new waste management plan presented by the Insular Council of Mallorca, the island will try to reduce its waste production by 48,000 tonnes before 2020.
Awareness-raising recycling campaigns will play a big part in the plan, said local authorities.
By recycling 68 per cent of cardboard and glass and 28 per cent of lightweight containers, for example, Mallorca residents will be able to reduce their annual waste production by more than 10 per cent, said Environment Councillor Catalina Soler.
The island currently produces an estimated 480,000 tonnes of waste.
