Two charities benefit as Santas take over the coast

GET WALKING: Santa Fun Run takes place

COSTA BLANCA SOUTH: The first Santa Fun Walk/Run to be held on the Orihuela Costa has raised over €1,200 for the AECC cancer charity.

Organised by Maria Wilson and the Pink Ladies, in partnership with the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre management, this year it started and finished from the shopping centre with around 200 entrants taking part in the 5km walk, including children and pets and of course Santa being pulled on his sleigh around the route by members of Torrevieja Tigers Rugby Club. Members of the provincial government were also present, supporting and taking part in the event, including co-ordinator for residents in the province of Alicante Samantha Biddles, who has fought her own personal battle with cancer.

Other participants did it for their own causes and to offer support: “We did it last year and it is just great fun to get in the festive spirit for a great cause” said Sue Fifield. Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, also greeted the crowds thanking them for their support of the charity as they headed off for the start.

Food items were collected for the Reach Out Torrevieja charity, who also donated €700 to the AECC in memory of volunteer Christine Flemming who passed away from cancer.

President of the Orihuela Costa branch of the AECC, Maria Wilson said: “The object of the day was to raise awareness and help two charities and to have fun at the same time and I think today we

achieved both.”
