ALMERIA: Spain’s first known cocaine laboratory has been raided in San Isidrio, Nijar, Almeria, and 12 people have been arrested.
A joint effort by Guardia Civil and National Police forces ended with the arrest of five Columbians, five Spaniards, one Nigerian and one Peruvian in Madrid, Almeria, Toledo and Cadiz, and the confiscation of 229 kilos of cocaine. Usually the already refined powder is smuggled into Spain, but in this case the raw plants were mixed with palm flour to be imported as animal feed. Once here the laboratory used techniques usually seen in Columbia to extract the drug first from the flour base then to refine the drug itself.
