Spanish in running for team of the year

FOUR Spaniards have been shortlisted for a prestigious ‘team of the year’ award as chosen by their peers.

Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta and Xavi, Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas, and Bayern Munich’s Xabi Alonso have been named as four of 15 midfielders to be nominated for the FIFA FIFPro World XI 2014. The team is decided by the players, for the players and involves tens of thousands of votes from footballers worldwide.

Also on the shortlist for midfield position – from which three will be chosen for the team – are Angel Di Maria of Manchester United, Eden Hazard of Chelsea, Toni Kroos of Real Madrid, Luka Modric of Real Madrid, Mesut Ozil of Arsenal, Andrea Pirlo of Juventus, Paul Pogba of Juventus, James Rodriguez of Real Madrid, Bastian Schweinsteiger of Bayern Munich, Yaya Toure of Manchester City, and Arturo Vidal of Juventus.

The team of the year will be unveiled at the next Balon d’Or awards in Zurich on January
