TABERNAS DESERT has been voted the second wonder of rural Spain in a survey by the Toprural portal. It received 2,208 votes out of 7,000, to gain second place in the survey behind Las Hurdes in Caceres.

The Tabernas Desert is enjoying a revival in the movies currently, with film epics including Exodus and Clavius being shot there, and Arnold Schwarzenegger looking to reprise his former role as Conan the Barbarian.

From 1950 to 1970, it was the setting for many Westerns.

With more than 11,600 acres, the desert was declared a nature reserve in 1989.

The other rural wonders in Spain were Cañon del Rio Lobos in Burgos, Playa de las Catedrales in Lugo, Nacedero del Rio Urederra in Navarra, Aiguestortes National Park in Lleida, and the Benasque Valley in Huesca.
