THE Red Cross is this month distributing more than 700 tonnes of food to the most deprived people in Alicante province.

The action ends the 2014 Food Plan which has seen millions of food items given to around 47,500 people.

According to the NGO, in the last 10 months the number of people struggling to feed themselves and their families has risen to 60,000. Of these, more than 3,100 are infants with the Red Cross providing baby food and milk. In addition, more than 40 per cent of people who get food support are under the age of 18.

The most popular foods given through the humanitarian organisation include olive oil, rice, pasta, beans, canned goods, sugar and biscuits.
