The 69-year-old medically-trained priest Manuel Garcia Viejo, was admitted to Madrid’s Carlos III hospital on Monday September 22, were he underwent treatment for the disease which he contracted whilst working in the Hospital Order of San Juan de Dios in western Sierra Leone.

Flown to Madrid in a medically-equipped military lane, Garcia Viejo’s condition was always described as ‘grave.’

Garcia Viejo is the second Spanish priest to die of the disease. In August, Miguel Pajares also succumbed to the illness which has ravaged West African these last few months.
