Natural beauty and culinary delights

ANDALUCIA has hidden treasures and one of them is perched on a small mountain known locally as La Mesa de Mazmullar. It is a restaurant called Table Mountain in Comares.

Just overlooking the inland area of Axarquia is the village of Comares, it is here you will be able to sample the incredible views, food and drinks that make Table Mountain Restaurant and Bar unique.

Owner Harrie explains “I am 50 per cent Spanish and 50 per cent Dutch; people forget that Holland was an Indonesian territory, much the same as India was for England, so I have a strong Indonesian heritage that our menu takes its influence from.

“Our menu is special, in Spain especially here inland, it is difficult to get anything other than typical, basic Spanish food, which is wonderful, but sometimes people want something a little different.

They can find that here in Table Mountain.” True to his word, Harrie’s menus offer treats like Satay chicken, which diners can choose to have as either a starter or a main course. The chicken, which has been marinated in spices, is served on skewers with fries and wok vegetables.

Harrie said: “It is our best seller so we must be doing something right.” Harrie’s personal favourite dish is Beef Rendang. This dish was recently voted as number one in the Top 100 best street food in the world by CNN; a beef curry which is simmered in spices for hours, but is not overly hot, served with Basmati rice and a sprinkling of peanut and coconut, pickled vegetables and onion. There is a Rendang Tofu, with all the flavour but without the meat, especially for vegetarians.

As an additional special Table Mountain is this month, launching its version of an Indian Curry. “It is along the lines of the absolute favourite Chicken Tikka Masala, but with more bite and served with Coconut milk rather than cream. We think it will be very well received.”

Table Mountain Restaurant is closed on Mondays.
