NEWS that LD lines have cancelled their sailing routes from Poole to Santander and Gijon has come as quite a surprise to those tourists and expats who had welcomed the lines’ new routes when they launched last November, particularly those several hundred with return tickets to Poole, who have been offered alternative returns to the UK. The French firm LD Lines wrote to customers saying all trips booked after September 7 to Santander and Gijon had been cancelled. This has left many customers frustrated as alternative sailing routes have different dates and times, leading to a knock on effect on customers holiday times and holiday accommodation
After starting the Santander route in November 2013, LD Lines added the link to the Northern Spanish port of Gijón just two months later, both on the Norman Asturias, the largest ferry to enter the port. The new route was deemed an economy route with one way sailings as low as 150 euros. However, rivals Brittany Ferries also launched an economy service from Portsmouth to nearby Santander in March which appears to have had an impact on LD Lines’ business plan. In a statement on their website the company said, “the weekly services were stopping following a business review.”
