Rooney named United captain

Wayne Rooney will be the new Manchester United captain in the upcoming season with Darren Fletcher set to be his second in command as vice captain.

The veteran of 10 years at the club was the clear favourite for the role after Nemanja Vidic left for Inter Milan this summer. He has won five Premier Leagues with the Red Devils and a Champions League in his time.

“It is a huge honour and a role I will perform with great pride. I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me,” said Rooney.

He has previously been captain in the absence of other senior players but he is now recognised as the club captain. Rumours around the football world have hinted that Van Persie might get the job due to his connection with Van Gaal but having signed in 2004, Rooney is a stalwart of the team. Van Gaal has praised Rooney for his attitude and believes he has made the right decision.

Fletcher is a fan favourite after suffering many injury problems and hopes this season could welcome back his best form and Darren will fully enjoy his new role.
