A young boy has been given a new lease on life after undergoing an operation forming a new pair of ears made from his own ribs.
Kieran Sorkin, a 9-year-old child, was born deaf and without fully formed ears, only having tiny lobes. He suffered from bullying and teasing in school but is now ecstatic after the surgery carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
Despite still only having 10% of his hearing Kieran will gain so much confidence. Father David said “He has now moved to a different school and they have a deaf unit in every year, so they are a little bit more receptive to deafness and to a child looking different. But this will boost his confidence no end.”
The doctors made the ears from his cartilage and then attached them to his body, which will in a bit of time look exactly like a normal ear. After suffering such an unlucky break, only one in 100,000 babies suffer from the condition, he will be very happy.
