Rajoy greets basketball team

In anticipation for the upcoming Basketball World Cup Mariano Rajoy had a meeting with the whole national squad, technical team and also Miguel Cardenal, president of CSD, and José Luis Sáez, head of the Spanish Basketball Federation.

He had been with Artur Mas only a few hours previously discussing politics, but took some time to wish the team good luck. This golden generation has been growing for many years now and many in Spain believe this could be the moment. Legends of the game like Juan Carlos Navarro, Pau Gasol and Felipe Reyes still remain, but great youngsters are coming through, even having caught the eye of then Sports Minister and now President Mariano Rajoy.

One by one they were greeted by Rajoy and lastly the captain Navarro presented Rajoy with a jersey and a few words of thanks.  Sáez then thanked the Executive for all of their support in aiding the Basketball Federation in these years and that much more success would be coming. He also urged people to forget the heartbreak of 2010 when Spain got eliminated by Serbia in the final second of the quarter finals.

Rajoy looked to the promise of the youth mentioning Abrines who plays for Barcelona and is one to watch in the future. He went onto say that basketball was enriching the image of Spain and that all should enjoy the sport at the moment.

Not to forget the women’s team which although not as successful is still competing strongly and recently gained silver in the Euros. Rajoy hopes that the team can bring some happiness to the country and even took a selfie with Serge Ibaka, one of the team’s star players. The first friendly takes place on August 6.
