The rainbow flag will fly especially high across Spain all this month as gay celebrations engulf the country along with the rest of the world.
The party kicked off last Saturday with parades and parties all over the country. For example, gay icon and Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst was seen partying in the Fiesta del Orgullo de Valencia as the city kicked off the four day festival.
Spain’s first pride festival was held in Madrid in 1979 after the death of Franco and the start of democracy and today it is the biggest in Europe attaching around 1.5 million attendees.
This huge party is starting this week. From July 2 to 6 Madrid will be filled with music, parties and other cultural events, the highlight being a massive parade through the Paseo del Prado on Saturday night.
In other LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transgender) news, Elton John has announced that he is intent on visiting Russia to debate the country´s anti-gay laws.
“I am going to Russia in December, or November. I will try and meet Putin and I will try and talk to him. I don’t know what good it will do, but unless you build a bridge … it’s no good putting up a wall and saying ‘I’m not talking to these people.’ The only way things get solved is by talking to people,” he told Sky news.
The Russian government have been strongly criticised by the international community after it passed a series of anti-gay propaganda laws in June.
John also stated in the interview that “If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen.
“He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that is what the church should be about.”
