Emma Watson’s ‘illegal staff’ fiasco

The Home Office is launching an investigation into whether Emma Watson hired a maid who had no right to work in the UK.

It is claimed she was working in Watson’s £2million (€2.49 million) north London home despite only having a tourist visa.

The Harry Potter star now faces a civil penalty of up to £10,000 (€12,490) for breaching immigration laws.

The maid originally started working in Watson’s New York apartment last year. However, the UK’s border agency received a tip off that she had been coming and going from the UK regularly, so UK immigration staff quizzed her on her ability to afford this lifestyle.

It is believed that the maid spent a total of three months in the 24-year-old’s Islington home between last September and this February.

The Home Office stated that: “An allegation has been received and processed and has been allocated for further action.”

Watson is not the first British famous face to fall into hot water over this type of breach. In February, Immigration Minister Mark Harper was forced to resign after it came out that his cleaner was in the country illegally.
