Bob Dylan’s lyrics auction record

The handwritten manuscript for Bob Dylan’s most popular song,’Like a Rolling Stone’, was sold for €1.5m (£1.2m) at Sotheby’s.

It is a track described as revolutionary in its confrontational lyrics and its combination of different musical elements. ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ has been covered by numerous artists, varying from Green Day, Jimi Hendrix and The Wailers.

The popular song is considered one of the most influential in post war music, and surpassed the previous record set by John Lennon’s €880,000 (£700,000) handwritten lyrics for ‘A Day in the Life’ in 2010.

The working draft went to an unidentified bidder described as a long time fan of the musician, which the auction house called a world record for the most expensive rock music manuscript.

A spokesperson for Sotheby’s said: “The manuscript is the only known surviving draft of the final lyrics for this transformative rock anthem.”
