A valiant 108 runs off 281 balls by England all-rounder Moeen Ali nearly saved the game against Sri Lanka.
But with just a ball to spare last man James Anderson was snared by Shaminda Eranga to give the tourists their first test series win in England.
Now England captain Alastair Cook’s position is vowing to carry on in the position after his leadership was questioned during Sri Lanka’s 100 run triumph.
“It’s a huge honour to captain England and I’m in it for the long haul, as long as I can be, because I believe I’m the right man for the job.” Cook added: “I’ve got to give all blood, sweat and tears into the England captaincy. I never quit on anything, I’m a determined bloke and I’m determined to turn this around.”
Resuming the day on 57 for five England were up against it, but they at last showed some character to so nearly save the game. Last man James Anderson faced 55 balls without scoring a run before he was finally caught.
