Spain’s new king meets terror victims

The newly proclaimed King of Spain, Felipe VI, and his wife Queen Letizia have met with victims of terrorism in their first official event together, since Felipe took the throne last Thursday.

The group welcomed the New King’s first speech calling for a “New Spain” during his proclamation in parliament on Thursday. They remembered those victims of terrorist violence, who “lost their lives or suffered to defend our freedom, and they would be remembered with immense respect.”

The meeting was attended by Interior minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz among other representatives of several groups of terror victims, who asked for greater commitment and resolution over unanswered crimes committed by the separatists group ETA.

It is estimated that over 300 ETA-related murder cases have not yet been solved.

The recently published poll showed that most Spaniards want their new king, Felipe VI, to play a greater role in politics and to stabilise the link between the country’s divided parties and regions.

While three quarters of Spaniards believed the new monarch should personally oversee agreements on Spain’s problems if politicians failed to do so, with 91 percent believing there was an urgent need for more political reconciliation to solve Spain’s  current problems.
