Most wanted criminal caught in Banus

Merseyside’s most wanted criminal has been captured on the Costa del Sol, as the result of cooperation between Britain’s National Crime Agency and the Spanish authorities.

David Hewson, 31, was detained by armed Spanish police along with his partner and child, in his luxury villa located in the hills above rich man’s playground Puerto Banus.

The Litherland drug lord had dyed his hair and changed his appearance in an effort to enjoy a comfortable life among the Costa del Sol’s expat community.

Hewson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine in September 2012 and was sentenced to 11 years in prison in the UK. The authorities believed Hewson had fled to the Costa Del Sol 18 months ago, when he vanished after failing to turn up to a crown court hearing to be sentenced for masterminding a £200,000 cocaine conspiracy.

The drug trafficker from Eccleshall Avenue, Litherland , featured on the most recent police campaign called ‘Unlucky 13’, which was launched in Spain in November last year.

He becomes the 59th fugitive arrested as part of Operation Captura which aims to track down and return fugitives from British justice. He now faces extradition to Britain to serve out the sentence handed down in his absence.

The National Crime Agency’s Head of Fugitives, Dave Allen, said: “This arrest shows Operation Captura continues to be one of the most successful multi-agency fugitive projects anywhere and it is for this reason that I continue to believe that those still at large will be caught.”
