Inspectors to oversee donkey welfare in Mijas.
THE Nerja Donkey Sanctuary is scheduled to close its doors at the end of June after it failed to get the licences needed to stay open.
The charity could only continue if it changed its location, which would cost close to €10,000. Some of the donkeys are being taken to El Refugio Del Burrito in Antequera, to be cared for, while others are moving to Marbella and Frigliana.
There are animals that have not found a new home yet, including a horse named Campeone, four dogs and five cats.
The sanctuary needs donations since the staff needs to pay off their outstanding debts.
On their website, the sanctuary team thanked the thousands of people that have supported them in the last 10 years. The sanctuary originally opened its doors in June 2004. Since then, they have rescued hundreds of equines. They have also given a safe haven to countless farmyard animals, including chickens, turkeys, sheep and goats.

I’m so sad to hear this news. I’ve visited the Sanctuary and know the staff at the Donkey Sanctuary have done a wonderful job over the years and must feel heart broken to lose this safe haven. I hope all the animals find a new home.
Just heard about the Donkey Sanctuary closing – very sad.I have a disk full of photos that I took at the sanctuary in September 2013, if Harriet , Kate, Jenny or anybody else connected with the sanctuary would like the disk please contact me. I am in the Costa Del Sol for a few days leaving early on Saturday 13th Sept.
Nerja has lost a very valuable tourist attraction. I read that the Council “did not want it there”. If that is true, they are very unwise. We live in England & loved to visit Nerja , a big part of our enjoyment being to visit the sanctuary. Now the sanctuary has gone, there is less motivation to.visit.
I visited Narja 3 times and was planning to come back this year- after closing this sanctuary it’s pointless. It was great place!Nerja lost another tourist…
