Spain’s toll roads set to become cheaper

Spanish Public Works Ministry have revealed a plan to lower the toll fees on motorways.

Ministers are in agreement to implement a “plan of action for growth, competitiveness and efficiency,” a new strategy to improve Spain’s economy.

Toll roads usually include a form of road pricing typically implemented to help recover the cost of road construction and maintenance. But in an effort to boost traffic, Spain’s debilitated toll motorways are set to become cheaper during off-peak periods.

2013 was the seventh consecutive year of losses for the companies operating in Spain’s 2,560 kilometres of toll roads.  The latest figures reportedly show the roads averaging fewer than 16,000 vehicles a day.

Although no details of the off-peak tariff cuts have yet been announced, the ministers believe this new policy will boost the transport infrastructure and the national economy in the long term.
